Abstract: Design thinking or »design as research« is a technique where design approaches and methodologies – the »designerly way of thinking« – are used to tackle new challenges and »wicked problems«. the term wicked problem was coined over forty years ago in an article on planning theory, describing problems that are difficult or impossible to solve because of the nature of requirements and interests involved. In the talk, design thinking is shown to be a viable and attractive approach to such problems, overcoming many of the problems introduced by engineering practices usually focussed on feasability, efficiency and technical elegance
